Regulations defining the Scope of the Profession of Orthotics and Prosthetic Technicians, 2024

The Minister of Health has, in terms of section 33 of the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974), and on the recommendation of the Health Professions Council of South Africa and the Professional Board for Occupational Therapy, Medical Orthotist / Prosthetist, made the regulations in the Schedule.

1. Definitions

In these regulations, any word or expression to which a meaning has been assigned in the Act shall bear such meaning.

2. Acts pertaining to the profession of orthotic and prosthetic technicians

The following are acts pertaining to the profession of orthotic and prosthetic technicians:
(a)fabrication, repairs, and maintenance of orthoses, prostheses, and footwear;
(b)reviewing of the technical requirements of orthotic and prosthetic devices;
(c)formulation of fabrication requirements within the established treatment plan;
(d)implementation of the fabrication requirements;
(e)performing applicable machine maintenance and calibration; and
(f)generally providing technical support to medical orthotists and prosthetists.

3. Short tittle

These Regulations are called Regulations Defining the Scope of the Profession of Orthotics and Prosthetic Technicians, 2024.
