Regulations relating to the Registration of Orientation and Mobility Practitioners, 2024

The Minister of Health has, under section 24 of the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974) and on the recommendation of the Health Professions Council of South Africa, made the regulations in the Schedule.

1. Definitions

In these Regulations, any word or expression to which a meaning has been assigned in the Act has the meaning so assigned, unless the context otherwise indicates—"Professional Board" means the Professional Board Occupational Therapy, Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics and Arts Therapy established in terms of section 15 of the Act;Orientation and Mobility Practitioner” means a person registered as such in terms of the Act; andAct” means the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974).

2. Registration as Orientation and Mobility Practitioner

(1)The registrar may register as an Orientation and Mobility Practitioner any person who holds any one of the following qualifications, which shall include experiential training obtained under supervision of an occupational therapist in a training facility approved by the board for this purpose:

(2)Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in these Regulations, any person who has worked as an Orientation and Mobility Practitioner for a minimum period of five years prior to date of promulgation of these regulations may apply to the Board for registration as an Orientation and Mobility Practitioner, and the Board may exempt such person from the requirements of subregulation (1).
(3)The Registrar must register as an Orientation and Mobility Practitioner any person who has been exempted from the provisions of these regulations in terms of sub regulation (2).

3. Application for registration

(1)A person who worked as an Orientation and Mobility Practitioner for a minimum period of five years immediately prior to the date of the promulgation of these Regulations must apply to the registrar on a Form supplied by the Professional Board.
(2)An application referred to in sub regulation (1) must be accompanied by evidence of practice or employment as an Orientation and Mobility Practitioner.

4. Short title

These Regulations are called Regulations relating to the Registration of Orientation and Mobility Practitioners, 2024.
