Measures to prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19 in the public transport services

Government Notice 483 of 2020

I, Fikile Mbalula, MP, Minister of Transport, in terms of regulation 4(7) of the Regulations issued in terms of the Disaster Management Act, 2002 (Act No. 57 of 2002) hereby issue the directions to address, prevent and combat the spread of the COVID-19 as set out hereunder:
Once-off long distance inter-provincial transport
(1)Long distance inter-provincial passenger transportation by taxi and buses is permitted on a once off basis from 1 May 2020 to 07 May 2020.
(2)Taxi and buses must not carry more than 70% of their maximum licensed passenger carrying capacity.
(3)All operators must ensure that public transport vehicles are sanitized before each load journey and after dropping of passenger.
(4)Operators must ensure that all public transport vehicles’ doors and window handles, arm rest and hand rails are sanitized after every load and passengers be sanitised before they enter the vehicle.
(5)All passengers and drivers must wear a face mask or an item covering his or her nose and mouth.
(6)No person will be allowed to use any form of Public Transport if they do not wear a face mask or an item covering his or her nose and mouth.
(7)All public transport operators must put measures in place to adhere to physical distancing to curb the spread of the virus.
(8)Public Transport is permitted to operate from 05h00 to 19h00 and the driver must ensure that the drop-off is completed by 19h00.This Notice shall come into effect on the date of publication in the Government Gazette.R F.A. Mbalula, MPMinister of Transport
